The SICAM FRTU (Feeder Remote Terminal Unit) 6MD25 is an Intelligent Electronic Device (IED) that acquires data from feeders (like RMUs, distribution transformers, etc) and transfers the information to the central station.The FRTU is a versatile tele control device with modular design. Generator sets typically have their own primary controllers. If several of them operate jointly in an island grid, they need to be coordinated. Generation control ensures the most reliable power generation possible in industry grids containing several generator sets – both connected to an external power utility and in island mode.

Ensuring grid stability

Generation control establishes evenly balanced active power that enables power demand from an external grid to be set, to keep within a maximum purchasing limit from the external grid, or to stabilize the frequency in the islanded grid. It can, however, also establish evenly balanced reactive power in order to maintain a desired power factor angle at the tie-line to an external grid or to stabilize the rated voltage of the busbars in island mode. Generation control also calculates the spinning reserve in order to ensure that there is always sufficient control capacity available.

Efficient and convenient

Generation control is totally integrated in ENEAS substation automation and runs on a central computer, with optional redundancy available. As a result, there is no need for additional devices or inputs/outputs. In addition, the same user interface is used for control and monitoring as well as for ENEAS power management.

This provides a very transparent means of displaying numerous parameters, for example, power flows and reserves, operating modes, individual generator sets, and entire grid areas.

The process i.e. condition and measured value acquisition as well as the output of commands and setpoint values is interfaced via field and/or telecontrol devices. These are linked to the plant control center via high-speed communication. This distributed architecture enables the connection to be flexibly adapted to the primary controllers. Important machine data and setpoints are exchanged via serial and parallel interfaces, or a combination of both.

The SICAM Fault Collector Gateway (FCG) device receives both the load current values and distribution line faults via the SICAM Fault Sensor Indicator (FSI)

The received information status and events are transmitted to the control center based on the IEC 60870-5-104 protocol or to the Siemens FLiC service using the XMPP protocol. The fault detected by SICAM FSI is communicated to SICAM FCG via short-range radio (SRR) communication within a distance of 100 meters.

SICAM FCG provides 6 binary inputs and 3 binary outputs. SICAM FCG can be configured and diagnosed locally using the Web GUI by connecting to a PC or laptop computer or remotely via General Packet Radio Service (GPRS).

The SICAM FCG has a plastic housing and it is strongly recommended to mount it within a metal cabinet for additional protection. The Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) and short-range radio antenna are mounted outside the metallic cabinet. SICAM FSI firmware and parameters can be updated from the SICAM FCG.

SICAM FCG Web GUI allows you to configure the parameters, display error and event log, upgrade of firmware, and download the configuration.

Binary Interfaces

  • On the terminal block L, all the 3 binary inputs are independent and have a fixed threshold of 8 V. On the terminal block P, 2 binary inputs have a common root (P8, P9, and P10), 1 binary input (P11, P12) is independent.
  • These binary inputs have selectable thresholds of DC 19 V, DC 88 V, or DC 176 V. Therefore an optimal adjustment to the pickup voltage can be made in the case of increased interference level.
  • The binary outputs are designed as relay contacts. The terminal block P has 2 relay outputs Normally open (NO) and one relay output change over (CO). The relays can switch voltages up to AC/DC 250 V and currents up to AC/DC 5 A.

Communication

  • SICAM FCG is a gateway device on the communication network between the SICAM FSIs and the control center. It provides interfaces and supports communication protocols to the SICAM FSIs (via short-range radio) and to the control center (via mobile networks). The gateway contains an interworking function for the communication exchanged between SICAM FSIs and the control center. The various device communication interfaces and protocols are available for the communication between the SICAM FCG and the control center.
  • SICAM FCG has an Ethernet interface which supports the device parameterization and the monitoring.
  • The communication interface supports the device parameterization and the transmission of messages and measured values. The information is transmitted in telegrams in a secured way.

    Automatic load shedding: Fail-safe power supply for core components

    In case of overload, automatic load shedding stabilizes the power supply of large-scale industrial plants through the prioritized disconnection of consumers, thereby ensuring that core processes remain under power in critical situations and expensive downtimes are avoided. This function is especially important when grid stability is put at risk by critical events. In this case, low priority consumers are disconnected in order to restore the balance between energy generation and consumption.

     

    Prepared for every eventuality

    To ensure grid stability at all times, the automatic load shedding system analyzes all possible fault patterns in advance and calculates which loads will need to be disconnected. In the event of a fault, the system recognizes which of these scenarios pertains and disconnects the relevant consumers within a tenth of a second.

     

    Power-based load shedding continuously calculates the necessary reactions to critical scenarios that could occur and is therefore prepared for all eventualities at all times. This predictive approach is used for fast load shedding as well as for blocking of large loads.

     

    Fast power-based load shedding

    Critical events – like a disconnection from the external power utility grid or the failure of a generator in island mode – require the fastest load shedding possible in order to limit the resulting drop in power frequency and prevent triggering of the underfrequency protection. The system only sheds as much load as necessary for restoring the rated frequency.

     

    Dynamic power-based load shedding

    In stable island mode, loads change as needed by the industry process. These variations are balanced by the primary control of the on-site turbines. As the power requirement increases, the spinning reserve decreases, reducing the capability for starting big loads. Dynamic load shedding monitors the spinning reserve for a defined limit value. While it is permissible to exceed the limit for short periods, load is shed if these periods last for longer in order to restore the required reserve. In addition, in island mode large consumers are monitored while in the idle state.     Frequency-based load shedding

    This function is available both as an independent main function for ordinary applications and as a reserve function for fast power-based load shedding. It monitors when the frequency drops below given thresholds and sheds predefined loads as required, independent of the control system. It can function in the event of multiple faults in the grid, and also sheds loads reliably even when the central unit is disconnected.

     

    Wide range of different applications

    The ENEAS solution for load shedding is suitable for both compact and large grids, regardless of whether they contain one or more substations – both in greenfield and brownfield projects. Even for plants with existing parallel wiring to a central point there is an alternative solution available.
